Matt's Story
So “officially” I’m currently the longest serving schools worker in LiNX having been here since June 2007. Having just re-read that sentence myself I’ve realised two things 1) I’ve been round for half of LiNX’s existence, 2) I’m old! Well ok maybe “old” is relative but when I run in to ex students who reminisce about me in their year 7 lessons, as they serve me coffee, fix my car and cut my hair, it sets in to context how long I’ve been involved and what a privilege it has been to have been part of so many young peoples lives.
The majority of my time within schools has been spent in the classroom working with Philosophy & Ethics (R.E) classes and leading PSHE sessions. This input has always been greatly valued by the schools and within Brixham College particularly LiNX’s input has become an integral part of the schools curriculum, not only because of it’s content in covering topics from the Christian perspective but also because, over the years, we’ve delivered consistently quality academic sessions that meet the needs of the students and the schools curriculum. This I feel has been hugely important, without this professional and academic approach I’d never have had the opportunities to talk to all those students that are now serving me coffee etc, and they would never have had the opportunity to hear about the Christian faith and the hope that it brings. One of my favourite opportunities of the year is working with Year 7 students on a lesson simply titled “Does God exist?” Obviously this is a far from simple question, but the discussions and questions brought forward by the students on the sort of proof they would require and the proof that the Christian faith offers, are really interesting and often set a positive tone for further chats outside of the classroom. That has always been the strength of what LiNX does in schools, although our content may only last an hour in a classroom setting, often the after affects can be seen through conversations and relationships at Elevate, the afterschool drop-ins and youth groups across Torbay. |
