I never thought I would be a youth/schools worker when I was working in Human Resources at Nortel in 2002. However, God had different plans, and when I met Nigel Taylor one day and got talking to him about the work of LiNX I felt called to volunteer my time, (I had already decided to take voluntary redundancy from my job). I helped with lunch clubs and some office work, until the administrator left and I took on that role, while still running lunch clubs.
In 2004 I left to have my first child but 5 years later when my second child was 18 months old, I felt that God was calling me back into the work and I took on a part-time role as a schools worker. I have never looked back. Although I did not have any specific training in youth or schools work, I had a lot of experience in training adults, which I found really helped in the classroom. I had also been doing youthwork within my church for a few years and loved working with teenagers.
My role has developed and grown over the past 8 and a half years. I am still part time but doing more hours than before which gives me a chance to develop the work in my two main schools, The Spires College and Torquay Girls Grammar School. I have been doing more and more small group and one to one work with girls as well as RE and PSHE lessons and lunch clubs.
I am passionate about introducing young people to Jesus; the radical, exciting, Jesus. He changed my life when I was 26 and I want other people to experience the wholeness and freedom that a relationship with Him brings.
In light of this I am also passionate about working with young people with low self esteem. I want young people to know their worth and value and to know that they are loved beyond measure. At the moment the small group work I do is mainly in St Cuthbert Mayne School.
This year I would love to see it expand into the other two schools but God’s will be done! Please pray that God would continue to guide my work and show me what He is already doing in the schools so I can join in with Him. That’s what I love doing!
